BEAT MEMORIES: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg

grey_art_gallery_4_20130118_1906651096.png A lesser known fact about Allen Ginsberg – one of the true visionary writers of his generation – is that he was also a photographer. He began actively taking photos in New York City in 1953, developing and printing his films at a drugstore near his apartment in the Lower East Side. Over the next ten years, he built up quite a portfolio, primary subjects often being his close-knit group of friends – people like William S. Burroughs, Neal Cassady, Gregory Corso, and Jack Kerouac, as well as himself. After skimming through the photos and giving a few away to friends, they were usually tossed to the back of a closet. Ginsberg later said they were “meant more for a public in heaven than one here on earth—and that’s why they’re charming.” In the early 1980s, he rediscovered his old negatives and became entranced with their poignancy, noting they were like “looking back to a fleeting moment in a floating world”. Encouraged by renowned photographers Robert Frank and Berenice Abbott, he had many of his earlier photographs reprinted in a larger format and began to make new ones, adding handwritten inscriptions describing the relationships and memories depicted in them. These spontaneous snapshots reveal the world of the Beat Generation to a new age and celebrate was Ginsberg called “the sacredness of the moment.” Beat Memories: The Photographs of Allen Ginsberg is now on view at the Grey Art Gallery of NYU, organized by the National Gallery of Art,Washington, and curated by Sarah Greenough. (Images: NYTimes via Juxtapoz)

Surface To Air Autumn/Winter 2013 Collection Lookbook The Surface to Air men’s AW13 collection travels to the future with the exploration of cosmic space and the moon, before heading back in time with ’90s minimalism, silhouettes and colors. On top of the classic, easy and wearable look, the collection offers a twist by focusing on the features of technical space suits. It is visually interpreted on the garments by using a multitude of zippers and snap buttons, adding rivets and action pleats. The space theme is also palpable through the choice of materials and prints, such as the Moon phase prints on shirts, metallic prints for t-shirts and futuristic iridescent textiles used for accessories and shoes. On the other hand, there is a hint of ’90s minimalistic approach on denims, raw cut and reversed detail and slightly oversized silhouettes. The use of silver color and silver accessories on clean, minimal garments echoes the season’s theme. The Surface to Air man is exploring space and exploring the realm of the expression of his personal style. (text: Karl Hab)

star-wars-7-jj-abrams It has been announced that Jeffrey Jacob, aka “JJ”, Abrams, director of Star Trek and Mission Impossible III, will direct Star Wars Episode VII, the first film in the sequel trilogy. The news has been greeted with relief and delight by fans of the franchise, who expressed concern last year when it was announced that Disney – nicknamed the House of Mouse by disgruntled fans – had bought the Lucasfilm production company for $4.05bn and intended to work on a new trilogy. Star Wars creator George Lucas said Adams was the ideal choice to direct the film, adding “the legacy couldn’t be in better hands”. Oscar-winning scriptwriter Michael Arndt, who wrote Toy Story 3, has been developing the film since October. The seventh film in the series has been given a 2015 release date, although Abrams has not committed to the date. Hints have been dropped that the new film could feature original Star Wars actors, including Carrie Fisher and Mark Hamill.
