On January 28, 1984 the record ‘It’s Yours’ by T La Rock & Jazzy Jay, produced and co-written by Rick Rubin was released into the world and caught the ear of party promoter and artist manager Russell Simmons. The meeting of these two minds would be the catalyst for an unlikely partnership that would develop rap’s most successful imprint – Def Jam Recordings. London-based brand S.O.O.N (Something Out of Nothing) honors this partnership with the ‘Rick & Russell’ capsule, in collaboration with UK illustrator Rebel Yuth. As such, they’ve also animated the above conversation between the heavyweight duo as they talk about the early spirit of Def Jam.
