With the recent passing of nationwide protests involving the final decision of the Eric Garner and Michael Brown cases comes another form of peaceful protest, RESPOND. An exhibit displaying the artwork of 200 artists at Smack Mellon Gallery located in Brooklyn, RESPOND is a powerful and sentimental showing of artwork reflecting on our country’s history of police brutality and racial discrimination along with the impact it’s had on our culture.
We had the opportunity to meet up with one of the artists showing his work at this exhibit, Savior El Mundo. He said, “This is an important exhibit to stop the violence and to help people realize that art is power”. ‘Powerful’ is certainly the impression one gets upon entering Smack Mellon Gallery and seeing the enormous 30 foot wall covered in personal and heartfelt artwork.
For those who have not yet attended and still wish to, the show is up until February 22nd at 92 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201.
