DGK has been on an upward trajectory since 2002, consistently putting out quality products and sponsoring some of the illest skaters in the game. Bearing a strong brand vision, DGK is all about turning negative situations into ones which are positive. As far as apparel is concerned, they’re well regarded for making bold graphic designs which have garnered an insane cult following. We had the pleasure of linking up with DGK to learn about their accomplishments in 2014.
Who is the creative director/s for your brand?
Nick Lockman is DGK’s Brand Manager. He comes up with most of the concepts for DGK’s series and collaborations. Brian Baker is DGK’s Art Director, he executes Nick’s ideas and contributes his own ideas as well. DGK’s direction comes from the collaboration between Nick and Baker.
What was your brand’s most successful release this year?
Holiday 2014 was super popular. The cut and sew was classic DGK and we introduced some fresh new prints like our Yin & Yang and Humbolt Collective designs – people were really feeling this season.
What were your brand’s top/best collaborative releases?
Our collaboration with G-Pen was our best this year. We went with a military style theme that included a camo vaporizer, dog tag grinder, and signature case. We supported the release with a pop up shop in the vault of our flagship store on Fairfax and we just threw a party with G-Pen at Agenda where Master P performed. All of the DGK crew are big smokers and we do marijuana themed products every season, so this collab just made sense and it was well executed.
What was your brand’s top/best limited edition releases?
Our collaboration with Jovontae Turner’s JT&CO brand was definitely the best limited release. Jovontae is a legendary skateboarder and an innovator of fashion within our culture. Tae has amazing taste and that translated into the capsule that we did with him. He’s also a longtime friend of the brand, so it was great working with him that project.
What was your best/favorite collaboration with an artist?
Our favorite artist collaboration this year was with the infamous skateboard artist Sean Cliver. Sean did many of our favorite graphics over the years and is considered one of the best from his genre. The DGK X Sean Cliver collab was based on one of Sean’s famous boards from the early ’90’s that featured a sexy drawing of the model Claudia Schiffer. We had Sean do an updated version of this with former Disney child stars including Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus and called it Good Girls Gone Bad. It was an awesome parody and also provided a little bit of social commentary – this series is definitely a classic.
