When Beyoncé released a surprise, self-titled album late Thursday, December 12th, 2013, she did what even the highest paid social media consultants say is impossible: she broke the Internet in the middle of the night.
Now Kid Cudi has dropped his own surprise album, SATELLITE FLIGHT: The Journey To Mother Moon, (Tuesday, February 26th), but NOBODY’S TALKING ABOUT IT.
Yes, the music blogs have posted about it, but whereas “#beyonce” was a trending topic on Twitter immediately after the album’s release, “#kidcudi” or “#satelliteflight” has barely show up as trending at all.
Why is this? What the hell is going on here? Why does nobody really care?
The First, Most Obvious, Reason Is That Kid Cudi Isn’t As Popular As Beyoncé
Beyoncé is basically an entertainment institution: she banks millions of dollars every year with her album sales and tours. From suburban housewives to urban trendsetters, her fan base is as broad and diverse as any other pop act’s. Plus, Beyoncé was a huge project, featuring not only 10 new tracks but 10 whole music videos. It was worth talking about.
That being said, Kid Cudi’s fans are all young people — certainly younger than Beyoncé’s — who love nothing more than to talk about stuff on the Internet. So why aren’t they?
Kid Cudi Confused His Fans
His problem may actually be self-made: Back in January, he took to his own Twitter to offer his two cents about the project, but basically said a bunch of confusing things about concept albums, space travel, and having to tweak the new album. See below.
These rambling, muddled tweets are hardly the kind of thing that get fans in an uproar of excitement about a new album.
The Music Industry Has Completely Turned It’s Back On Kid Cudi
In April 2013, Cudi left Kanye‘s G.O.O.D. Music i.e. the biggest rap group in the game, a move as inconceivable as the rock album he dropped soon afterwards, Indicud, i.e. one of his worst selling album to date.
Maybe no one’s freaking out about his new album because no one cares anymore.
Which is a shame, because Cudi still has a lot of creativity to offer. If you still haven’t heard SATELLITE FLIGHT, go to iTunes and fix your mistake.
