Recently I caught up with Chinatown Soccer Player Ben Pier to talk about one of his passions, football. The New York based photography who recently published his first book is a well known figure in the creative world and is a frequent contributor to THE NEW ORDER amongst other magazines.
What do you do?
I make pictures for a living. Other than that its a mix of bike rides, beach hangs, tacos, and working in my studio.
What part does football play in your life?
A somewhat major one. I play with the Chinatown Soccer Club and there’s nothing better than being involved with that. But I usually leave it on the field. I’m no enthusiast.
How often do you play football?
Two maybe three times a week.

What position do/would you play?
Wherever the Coach wants me. Mostly center back. I’m known as the tractor.
What do you think football has taught you?
To get up early. Really early. That & patience. For real though, being a photographer is a bit of a solo endeavor – so being part of a team with with a bunch of people with ranging skill sets is rad cause you have to come together to get it flowing.
How do you take the lessons you have learnt from football into your daily life?
You gotta know when hold ‘em and know when to fold ‘em…Also to know when to walk away and when to run. Oh wait – thats the Gambler.
How does football influence and inspire?
You can always be better. Don’t be bitter, be better. The players on the CSC are constantly inspiring. Being a part of that team is a dream for me. Equal elements of pride + humility.
What is the best game you have ever played in?
The one I haven’t played yet. …That or the one last fall when I scored four goals.
What is the best game you have ever watched?
St. Louis Steamers vs New York Arrows 1981 MISL final.
Finest memory in football?
Winning most improved player at the awards this past december.
