Cut & Shut : The History of Creative Salvage, is a new independently published book that explores the Creative Salvage design movement that arose from the early emergence of hip hop culture in the UK; a period of anarchic British design that saw designers reuse furniture as a chosen artistic medium. Quite surprisingly never before written about, the movement spawned some of the greatest British designers of a generation, including Tom Dixon, Ron Arad, Mark Brazier-Jones, Jon Mills, André Dubreuil, Danny Lane and Joe Rush. Interviews with these figures and a huge archive of previously unpublished images of their work are compiled by the co-authors; writer and furniture collector, Nick Wright and Gareth Williams, Head of Contemporary Art and Design at fine art auction house, Bonhams. Vince & Son, the design studio let by Creative Director Edward vince was commissioned to design the book and bring its story to life. This certainly looks like it will be worth a read – you can get your hands on a copy from Paul Smith, Tom Dixon, Dover Street Market, Themes and Variations, KK Outlet and Bonhams, as well as online through Vince & Son.
