Hackney-based set designer and illustrator Gary Card has installed an electric christmas tree at the King’s Cross Filling Station in London, using Vauxhall Ampera parts. Inspired by the design of the car, the tree will become a nightly spectacle when it opens up in an hourly display revealing his almost alien cybernetic design and mechanical structure.
“When Vauxhall approached me to design a Christmas tree, my immediate response was to create something mechanical. I loved the idea of applying the almost alien cybernetic design of the Ampera engine, to the familiar silhouette of the Christmas tree. The overall design is inspired by the angles of the Ampera with a little nod to the robot iconography I loved as a child. I wanted to celebrate the fact that the Ampera is an electric car by having an electrical mechanism powering the Christmas tree.” Gary Card
The Vauxhall Ampera Season will see Gary Card’s Electric Christmas at the King’s Cross Filling Station on display each evening from 30 November 2012 to 6 January 2013. (POST NEW)
