Sincere Palacios, better known as Sincere the Jeweler, has been the go-to jeweler for scene kids, NBA athletes and celebrities for several years. The Bronx-bred artist is considered, in part, responsible for the resurgence of “grills;” custom caps worn over the teeth, generally made in silver, gold and platinum. The mouth jewelry was popularized in the late 80s, as well as the 90s, by New York City’s hip-hop community.
The tale of Sincere’s atypical ascension to success is far from the conventional tales of many jewelers. Without formal training, Sincere taught himself the intricate ways of creating grills. “The way I learned is that I looked up things online and read up on this book. Because all of the tutorials online always left something out.” Sincere told CBS News. The true art lies in creating a custom wax molding which would sit comfortably on practically anyone’s teeth. Once the mold is taken care of, Sincere then works on melting gold down, only working with 14 carats and higher.
Already regarded as one of New York’s leading tastemakers, Sincere is showing no signs of laying his hustle to rest. The artist aspires to continue to increase his sphere of influence and bring his art to the consciousness of all New Yorkers. Check out some of Sincere’s work in the gallery above.
