Although Nas‘ first album (and to a lesser extent his second, It Was Written) far surpasses the rest of his work, Nas has managed to stay culturally relevant for more than 20 years. He’s admitted to making “music for people stuck in the ’90s”, and the fact that he continues to make money in the music industry is really testament to the greatness contained within Illmatic. It’s like how old rock bands are never going to produce music as good as they did in their prime, but they continue to sell out stadiums. The old stuff is just that good.
Time Is Illmatic
So what is Nasir Jones doing with the money and fame that Illmatic has afforded him this whole time? Apart from music, Nas currently has his hands in a few things. His business ventures don’t rival those of rap moguls like Jay-Z or Diddy, but his streetwear endeavors and boutique project both deserve a mention. Check them out below.
