The Extreme Games have begun this week, bringing a black cloud over the otherwise great city of Austin, TX. Sure, the seminal “action-sports” event was a novel idea at first: providing skateboarding and similar activities with an Olympic-style competition. But it quickly revealed itself as a pariah: combining energy drinks, an utterly clueless crowd, and the corniest “announcers” we’ve ever heard, to make a spectacle worthy of sheer second-hand embarrassment for anyone who actually pushes around in the streets on a regular basis. Seriously, the best thing you can say about the X-Games anymore is that guys who actually skate, and whatever city’s hosting it, are able to make money off it (even these two points are practically null nowadays, thanks to Rob Dyrdek‘s slightly-better Street League being able to fulfill the same duties.)
So, in honor of another start of the horrid marketing scheme that is the X-Games, we present our list of the 10 other Worst Trends In Skateboarding, that we wish would go away and never return.
Click through the gallery above, but take it all with a grain of salt if you’re an offender of any of these. It’s all in good fun, and skateboarding has enough people in it who take themselves too seriously.
