When we first began building a timeline comparing this founding dates for streetwear brands versus high fashion houses, we thought that the companies we now consider streetwear were all founded far more recently than the high end fashion brands.
But as we began populating the timeline, we found that many streetwear brands were just as old (if not older) than many designer labels. You can argue about what the definition of a streetwear label is (whether Levi’s and Timberland are streetwear or just an American heritage brand, or where COMME Des GARCON sits on the spectrum of streetwear to high end label), but the ones that fashionable kids are wearing and repping are actually much older than you’d expect.
That being said, the last 10 years have seen a proliferation of the signature streetwear brands that make up the basis of that space today.
