Jordan Brand has finally done what every other athletic sneaker company has already done: offered up a minimalist, premium version of their signature shoe design. Above is a preview of the company’s “Jordan Shine” shoe in black and red (red, obviously because every shoe is read now thanks to the Red Octobers).
It’s a simple design, taking the classic Jordan high-top silhouette, adding a woven upper and plopping the whole construction on the also classic Jordan sole.
Good for you, Jordan, since these going to be sold at Barneys and going to bear the Jordan name, they’re clearly going to make a killing. But, Jordan, your also late to the game, super-late. Later than all these other labels…
adidas and Y-3
adidas figured their designs needed to diversify and enlisted Yohji Yamamoto to do just that with Y-3, technically an extended collaboration between the Japanese designer and the German imprint.
Nike and Nike Sportswear
Nike Sportwear is a misnomer: the sub-label’s designs aren’t the kind of gear you’re going to suit up in before taking the field or the court. Instead, it’s all about sleekness, leathers, and high-price points.
PUMA and Alexander McQueen PUMA
PUMA teamed with Alexander McQueen for an extended collaboration and Black Label called, you guest it, Alexander McQueen PUMA. Imaginative folks over there.
Timberland and Timberland Boot Company
Even hardcore boot makers like Timberland have gotten in on the designer-style kick game. The American manufacturer launched Timberland Boot Company, getting out of their solely-for-construction workers, outdoorsman and rapper demographic to step on the toes of dressier labels like Johnston and Murphy and Cole Haan.
Jon Buscemi Goes From Gourmet Sneakers To The Buscemi 100MM
This trend towards high-end shoes isn’t just reserved for big-name shoe manufacturers, individual designers are making the switch too: Jon Buscemi sold his streetwear shoe company Gourmet in order to launch Buscemi and focus on a new, premium look. His most recent 100mms sold for over $800 a piece at Kith.
