At the close of 2013, SlamXHype brought together a panel of industry insiders and tasked them with sifting through the year’s almost innumerable streetwear collaboration releases so that we could pick The 10 Best Collaborations of 2013.
Products were judged on street buzz, overall quality, number of units made, time it took to sell out, and creativity of design. Below are the results. Categories included Best Sneaker Collaboration, Best T-Shirt Collaboration, Best Hat Collaboration, Best Boot Collaboration, Best Apparel Collaboration, Best Triple Label Collaboration, Best Use of Intellectual Property, Best Capsule, Best Pop-Up, Best Tradeshow Collaboration, and Best Overall Collaboration.
SlamXHype then presented the winners at Agenda‘s 2014 Las Vegas show. See the entire list of winners below and stay-tuned for more awards from SlamXHype coming in 2014.
Best Sneaker Collaboration: size? X Nike Airmax 93
Released in November and featured on the cover of Sneaker Freaker Issue 28, the size? X Nike Airmax ’93 reimagined one of the most classic Nike sneaker silhouettes in a mix of ocean azure and royal purple. The shoe came paired with a matching Air Huarache, and both were offered for sale at the UK-institution that is size?.
Best T-Shirt Collaboration: Clot X SSUR “Fuck EDC”
As part of the SSUR GUTTER STORE pop up in Hong Kong, Clot and SSUR released their “FUCK EDC” (i.e. Edison Chen, the owner of Clot) collaboration in February. The collection featured a hoodie, a snapback, and a set of T-Shirts, but the clean black and hot orange-accented tees were the stand out.
Best Hat Collaboration: BEEN TRILL X 40oz NYC
After releasing their now ubiquitous #NY# snapback, 40oz NYC partnered with the now huge BEEN TRILL collective to create a limited-edition collaborative release for Kith NYC. If you’re looking for the most-sought-after piece of headwear from 2013, this May release is just that.
Best Boot Collaboration: Stussy X Timberland
The arrival of the 2013 holiday season marked the release of Timberland and Stussy‘s highly anticipated 6″ boot. From the classic wheat colorway to the never-before-seen gold Timberland tree logo place at the heel, the collaboration was remarkable in its simplicity.
Best Apparel Collaboration: Mark McNairy X BBC Black Label
Mark McNairy and Pharrell‘s Billionaire Boys Club have been dropping release after release of successful collaborative projects. But the use of desert-inspired camo and subtle poetic text on the above collection was exquisite.
Best Triple Label Collaboration: Bape X UNDFTD X adidas
Bringing together three different companies for a single release is never easy, but adidas X Bape X UNDFTD did it, flawlessly with an updating of their ZX 500 runner for early 2013. If camo was the king of 2013 prints, the use of Bape’s signature camo on these sneakers made these the king of camouflage sneakers.
Best Use Of Intellectual Property: KAWS X Star Wars “Bobba Fett”
KAWS is a master of using pop culture characters in his toy designs and his “Bobba Fett” design was another such master class in the use of intellectual property. Done in concert with OriginalFake, Medicom, and Nexus7, the 12″ vinyl figure arrived in Tokyo in January.
Best Capsule: KENZO X Opening Ceremony
When you bring together KENZO, one of France’s most creative fashion houses, and Opening Ceremony, magic is bound to happen. Thus was the case for KENZO’s capsule collection for the premier retailer, a trippy journey through bold hat and T-Shirt designs featuring KENZO’s signature all-seeing eye.
Best Pop-Up: Kith East Coast Project
Featuring collaborations with the likes of Play Cloths, Just Don, Golden Bear, Stance, Stampd, Herschel Supply, Tina Catherine, and more, Kith’s East Coast Project went way beyond the traditional concept of collaborations, bringing together the best in streetwear for a series of Spring pop-up shops in Miami and NYC.
The most exceptional offering from the project was a matching set of Miami Beach-inspired jacket and ASICS Gel Lyte IIIs.
Best Tradeshow Collaboration: Agenda X ALIFE
For Agenda’s show, ALIFE redesigned its signature “ALIFE New York Crack” hat into an instant co-branded classic in deep black, bright red, and flashy gold.
Best Overall Collaboration: Kith East Coast Project
Along with the Miami Beach duo mentioned above, the New York City-inspired jacket and Gel Lyte III rounded out Kith’s uber-ambitious East Coast Project i.e. the best over-all collaboration of 2013.
