OUR RATING: 7.5 out of 10
It’s been 2.5 years since the release of Habits & Contradictions, ScHoolboy Q’s second independent album. Fast forward to 2014, and the “Hand On The Wheel” rapper has cemented himself as one of the West Coast’s rising stars.
The success of Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, m.A.A.d. City, the formation of the Black Hippy (a group that SchoolBoy is a member of, along with Kendrick Lamar, Jay Rock and Ab-Soul) and highly acclaimed features with Macklemore, 50 Cent and YG have all played a hand in the widespread anticipation leading up to the 27 year old South Central native’s major label debut, Oxymoron.
The album takes you on a dark thumping trip into the gang & drug infested streets of his South Central Los Angeles, and it certainly does not disappoint. Unless you are looking to dance, party, or do anything that involves having a nice time.
If however, you are planning on driving around in a car smoking copious amounts of marijuana and listening to someone rap about crack dealers, his f*cked up family, bucket hats, and prescription pills — all over intense snare drums — this is certainly the album for you.
Highlights include the songs “Man Of The Year,” “Break The Bank,” and the Tyler, The Creator-produced “The Purge.” While Q stands alone on a good majority of the album, there are features with Kurupt, Suga Free, Raekwon, 2 Chainz and his TDE compadres Kendrick, Jay Rock and SZA.
Best Song: “Man Of The Year”
Best Beat: “Break The Bank”
Best Guest Verse: Kurupt on “The Purge”, “Tired of this bullshit and everything y’all talk about/ They walked ‘em in, I walked’ em/ They talked ‘em in/ I chalked ‘em out”
Worst Song: “Los Awesome”. It’s really, really bad.
Worst Lyric: 2 Chainz on “What They Want,” “Just because I got dress/ Don’t get it twisted.”
