There is a place in Belgium where one man’s ruins are another man’s canvas. That place is called Doel and it’s a 17 miles up the Scheldt River from Antwerp. Doel is doomed to destruction thanks to an expansion of its southern neighbor’s harbor. Over 40 years ago, when the decision to expand was announced, Belgian officials attempted to forcibly evict the locals, but even now, Doel remains, a shell of itself, but a shell none-the-less.

It’s now been taken over by graffiti artists who have re-appropraited it’s decrepit buildings for their own purposes, painting the walls of houses and stores, streets and sidewalks. It’s a testament to both the forces of human progress and the spirit of creativity that remains, thrives, even after industry has departed.

Click through the gallery of images from Doel above, then read more about the town here.
