Ai Weiwei “According to what?” Exhibition at Perez Art Museum Miami

Chinese artist Ai Weiwei recently opened his “According to What?” exhibition at the Perez Art Museum in Miami. Of the several highly symbolic works, some of which draw from his personal memories, perhaps the most critical and noticeable of them is his ‘River Crabs’ installation. While the large-scale gathering of red and brown crabs is quite literal, the meaning behind it actually lies in it’s name. “He Xie” (‘River Crabs’), is a homophone with the Chinese word for the euphemistic “harmony” that the Chinese government attempts to preserve by censoring the Internet, and is used to dodge word filters employed for that purpose. In contrast to his more nostalgic and reflective pieces — like the Moon Case and Kippe installations — Ai Weiwei’s aptly named exhibit is a markedly more modern and Internet-savvy contrast.
